Day 011

Midday

Last day of Low Fog. Tomorrow will be High Fog.

We pick up having just crossed over to Isle Garganta. We meet Dr Dolus Remidium, who joins us.

We decide to head towards Garganta, crossing rocky terrain as night falls. We see a small village built into a terrace on a hill. Rough stone wall 10’ high surrounds village. A man stands guard, wearing thick leather apron, holding a pike. “State your business, travellers”

We tell him we travelled from Isle Norte and are seeking shelter. He introduces himself as Durreo. He asks if we have weapons and says it’s odd to see 4 oddly dressed outlanders. He says we need to check our weapons at the gate. He takes the weapons from Jase Walker and Thaddeus Bautista, but Dr Dolus Remidium hides his.

We enter the gate and are in a small gated-in area. The guards check our bags, then Durreo gives us directions to an inn - a place run by Aroone.

Not many people live here. Most are burly / rough, wearing dirty heavy leather smocks (they’re minors). Houses are rough contracted stone huts.

One building is a bit nicer and has columns.

We walk to the inn. It’s 2 stories - above the rest of the surrounding 1 story buildings. We enter and the room goes completely silent as all the patrons turn to stare at us. A middle-aged woman stands behind the bar. We ask where we can rent a room and Aroone beckons us over. As we walk up to the bar, the room empties out. Everyone leaves at once, shooting us dirty looks.

Aroone seems suspicious of us too. We give her a bushel of ficus leaves to pay for room and food and says she’ll give us a modest supper and we can stay in a dorm upstairs. Dr Dolus Remidium thinks Aroone is overcharging us. He gets her to give us a nicer meal.

She gives us ale and food. Only one patron remains in the tavern. Hector Castle goes over and talks to him. He introduces himself as Torren. He’s wearing an oiled leather jacket and pants, not the apron the others are wearing.

“The people here view outsiders as ‘unclean’. Some view the rains of this planet as being cleansing of the entire person or soul. Outsiders are seen as unclean and loaded up with the detritus of easy living. I’m what they call a way-finder.”

Hector asks what Torren knows about this island and the surrounding isles. Torren smokes an odd-looking black cigarette. He says Isle Norte is a backwater of a backwater and he never goes there. He refers to the Gene Stitchers as “witches” and says he doesn’t want to become “gristle for their vats”.

He says he belongs to a wayfarer’s meter that operates independently.

Hector asks if House Marina rules the entire area. He says they rule Isle Norte and Isle Garganta and manage the meters, collect taxes, etc.

He glances around nervously and says he’d be happy to give us his opinion on politics out on the trail, but there are ears everywhere. “Lady Isabella does a fine job managing these islands”

Aroone joins us at our table. “Let me be frank. I want off this planet. I could be of some assistance to you if you can help me with this matter.” quest

Dr Dolus Remidium looks him over and notices that the man seems desperate in his ask to get off the planet. He must be hiding something. clue

Aroon comes out with Meyerback meat, fried root vegetables, flatbread, etc. Torren immediately fixes himself a huge portion of food and says “So I take you to Tupak and you get me off this rock. What say you?”

We say we need to sleep on it. “I don’t think you understand. You need me. Do you have any idea how dangerous the road is? Isle Norte is child’s play. The road from here to Tupak is beset by predators - human and non-human alike.” We say goodnight and he stuffs some of the food into his pockets before he heads upstairs.

Dr Dolus Remidium stops him and asks if he’d like to join him for a drink. “Only if you have the sense to let me lead you to Tupak.” Dr Dolus Remidium tries to get him drunk so he can question him more.

Torren mentions he is unmetered and being chased by his old gang - The Mudlarks. clue He says he can get us to Tupak before they catch up.

We all head to bed.

Day 012

Aroone wakes us up early and tell us it’s time to go.

We head out onto the street as she shoos us out.

Tomorrow will be DELUGE.

We can’t get caught out in deluge, so we find Torren and say we’ll need his help as wayfinder.

He says we’ll need to leave at once. We approach the gate and Durreo gives us back our weapons. As soon as we’re outside the gate, Torren says if we pass through the Overgrown Mesa, we can be in the House Marina Estate by nightfall. They have a dirigible, but may allow us on it for a price. For them, a trip to the capital is nothing. He says outsiders with weapons are useful to them, but it won’t be easy.

Otherwise, we can head to the Old Aquaduct via Fronton and continue south. But this route would take weeks longer, but would require us to not have to do favors for the nobles.

We head towards Overgrown Mesa. A huge green hill covered in scrub and small trees and bushes. We’re traveling on an overgrown path and Torren stops and holds his hand up to get us to stop. As we do, we hear the leaves moving in the trees and he yells “run!” encounter

We run into a path and see a dilapidated tower - the upper half has been sheared off and the stone blocks are scattered. Thaddeus Bautista and Jase Walker stumble on roots of a tree and fall.

The creature claws Thaddeus Bautista.

We barely make it into a ruined structure at the base of the broken tower. Torren says the creature was a Canopy Crawler and it’ll chase us when we leave too.
